about us:

With a passion for people and a heart for weddings, White is my dream come true. Since my senior year in college, I have been working, breathing, speaking and living weddings. I'm that silly 4-year-old girl who draped a pillowcase from my head pretending it was a veil, carrying a roll of paper towel down the hall to my 'wedding song,' which was really the theme song from Jem and the Holograms! I love happy endings, and I believe in fairytale romance... I graduated from UH with a journalism degree in hand and actively pursued a career in the bridal industry. I entered the wedding field focusing on marketing and creating editorial for a local bridal magazine, later operating a destination wedding coordination company. These experiences gave me the opportunity to meet, mingle, and create solid friendships with Hawaii's elite wedding professionals. After getting hitched to my very own 'Rio (get it? Jem and Rio?),' an amazing opportunity fell in our hands to take over the ownership of The Wedding Cafe. Being able to share my knowledge and personal experience with other brides about wedding vendors, the planning, and expectations excited me. I couldn't imagine a better way to blend my passion and expertise... until now. White brings you one step closer into the lives of the people who make weddings work. Their talents are obvious, but their energy is contagious. Enjoy!"

My perfect wedding would be more like a tail gate party or a BBQ at Barber's Point. Two years ago, I would have never imagined having such an elaborate wedding or that there would be so many little details to plan! When I proposed to Tanna in 2003, like a typical guy, I sat back and pat myself on the back... my job was done. Boy, was I wrong! From the day we got engaged, I had lists of things to do - find 5 people to be my groomsmen, ask my parents for their guest list, call around to hotels for menus and figure out how much I could save for the wedding. And this was just Day One : List One. We were engaged for a year and a half! Little did I know that I was marrying a wedding-addict. I patiently went to all the meetings and helped make every decision (well, every decision that I was allowed to make!). The wedding was a huge project and I all of a sudden became the Co-Project Manager! Well, I guess I learned a few things along the way, because our wedding was flawless. And I know everything turned out perfectly because of the wedding vendors involved on our day. So when Tanna told me about White, there was no doubt in my mind that it was going to be a success. Being married into the wedding community, the vendors are like family to us. I know you'll book them for their work, but you'll love them for their personalities. I'm stoked to share with you what we already know about these cool cats!"

In the summer of 2005, my husband Roy and I set out to see the world. It was a plan we had made even before we were married 12 years ago. We parted with all our belonging except for a couple of backpacks and a oneway ticket. We spent the past year traveling the Pacific Northwest. It was a dream come true. The feel of ‘white’ are from notes I have taken on our strolls together and it reflects a part of our journey. The subtle tones of greens and browns of maple leave in autumn and the silhouettes they leave on the sidewalk when they are wet. The vines that creep up the brownstone houses in Portland. The soft rolling clouds in Astoria where the Columbia River splits Washington and Oregon and spills into the blue Pacific. The clean architectural lines of Vancouver BC’s waterfront and the design concepts of Seattle’s progressive artists. Our next stop is planned for New York with a possible stay in Chicago on the way. Roy is suggesting a train ride there from the west coast. At first I was thinking it was going to take too long, but then I thought of all the beautiful colors I get to see along the way. Yes. maybe we’ll go by train. Either way, I’m sure the next issue of white will reflect the places and people we meet next. See you then.

What most people don't know is that I have never spent a single day away from my wife Karen for the past 12 years and I don't want to. We always sleep together and wake up together. When we are at home, we're always in the same room. We eat together, we work together, we even brush our teeth together. The few hours we spend apart are lonely. Whenever one of us returns home the other always runs to the door, all the way to the car. Is that odd? I love going into the yard to grab wild flowers and weeds for our dining room table. I still write long love letters to her on ruled paper (like the ones in high school) and actually mail it to our PO Box at least once a month. Yes, I was that nerdy kid in school that wrote poems to girls. (By the way, if any of you girls still have those, would you please, please, please throw them away) When we are traveling I love mailing postcards to her telling her what a great time I'm having. Weird, but true. I love drawing her silly little pictures and leaving post-its all around the house. Karen has a little envelope she likes to collect them in. The paper and pen is a lost art. Getting email is nice, but I still believe that romance lives in a handwritten letter.
