Puns at Heart.
Sunday, 28 January 2007
I don't know about you pearl city grads... yes, the "p" and the "c" are lower case for a reason! (Roy, stay in your he said section, this is MY blog)... but being a graduate from Punahou is more than just being alum, you are a DEVOTED, LOYAL and AVID supporter of Punahou's pride and joy - the Carnival.

Yup, every January we get the email from our class correspondant rounding up the troops to tackle a carnival shift as a class - it's always the malasada booth and we always complain every year, although we secretly LOVE wearing those silly paper hats and sweating under the heat of the malasadas cooking... laughing the entire time. There is some kind of underlying, unspoken rule that everyone who graduates from Punahou, HAS to go to carnival if you're in Hawaii. HAS TO, Ask harpist Pumehana Davis and Derek Wong of Derek Wong Photography - both are Puns Alum, and both have asked me about carnival!

It sure is a proud thing to be a Punahou grad. I remember walking around carnival as a Senior, feeling so high and mighty. This was my last carnival as a student, the last rides on the Music Express with Mr. Highschool Boyfriend, the last time my best friend Erin and I would eat our way through every food booth (starting with a teri burger, taco salad, gyro, saimin, corn on the cob, Hawaiian plate and finishing of course with a bag of steamy malasadas and a candied apple if we still had room). We looked forward to carnival from the beginning of the school year... it was two days of fun and absolutely no homework!

Since I moved home from Oregon, I haven't missed a single carnival. Whether I took off work early on Friday afternoon or planned a Saturday date night with my hubby, the Punahou Carnival is always written into my planner (in pen) the first weekend of February. Rine or shine, the carnival goes on!

Hope to see you at the teri burger booth, or by the taco salad, or the gyros, or the saimin.... or for sure, at the malasadas.

Workshops WOO HOO

What I love most about bridal expos is seeing the excited brides and grooms walking around hand in hand with huge smiles on their faces and sparkly rings on their fingers, planning for their big day. If you think about it in the simplest terms, these love struck puppies are gathering information (seeds of love if you may) to plan (or plant!) and execute their dream day. This is HUGE stuff and we, at White and The Wedding Cafe, love playing a role (whether teeny or humungous) in the planning process.

So I walked around the expo playing the role of a bride and checked out the gorgeous photo albums, tasted nearly a hundred cake samples (some more than once!), sat in the super duper stretch limo, gazed longingly at the wedding video shows (I still cry every single time!) and even got my hair and makeup done! I have to admit, my fave part of the expo was walking around looking all dolled up with my new curls and airbrushed makeup...

Brides are so lucky! They get to plan this incredible day, knowing that their dream of wearing that "big, white dress" is about to come true. They get to be Cinderella and live their fairytale...

I LOVE weddings and I can't wait to kick off our Wednesday Night Workshops again at the cafe! We host a series of cool, intimate workshops twice a year. They're both 14-weeks running from January through May and July through October. Brides gather at The Wedding Cafe every Wednesday to see and hear the wedding pros dish about weddings. They give tips and advice, and the brides get to ask questions and get to know the pros on a friendlier level. I love the intimacy of the workshops and hearing what the other brides are asking. You get a ton of one on one time with the vendors and have the opportunity to stay after and ask your own questions. I can't figure out which workshop I like best... the hair and makeup demos, the cake samplings, the photography showcases, Manoa Nights... they are all SO informative! And the best part is, it's at The Wedding Cafe, a brides' home away from home!

Business Law 101
Wednesday, 10 January 2007
Whenever I meet a new bride at the cafe, I instantly try to make a connection. Build a friendship, you can say... I strongly believe that before anyone can trust my opinions for their wedding planning, I need to establish a relationship and find a common ground. Sound familiar? Yup, this is Business Law 101. How to Deal with People.

"What highschool did you go to? OH! Do you know so and so? What year did you graduate?"

"What was your last name? HEY! Are you related to so and so?"

"Where do you work? REALLY? I love that little deli downstairs of your building!"

Sound familiar? Sure! We all do it... and the wedding market is no different. So what does this have to do with White? Everything. White is the creation formed by connections. We call it "advertising with a heartbeat" because that is exactly what we did... we put a voice, personality and character to Hawaii's wedding pros. White is all about people, which you and I both know, is the ultimate factor. People want to know about people. It's human nature!

I love the way White lists the wedding people's favorite Ala Moana store, shampoo or sushi bar. I don't know about you, but whenever I see a list of favorites, I always compare theirs to mine, looking for that ah-ha! moment when I can say "...oh look, we both have the same favorite cereal!" It's funny how we love to make connections in Hawaii. Don't you notice that friendships start as easily as that? Along with the fave list, you'll get engrossed in how the wedding elite got their feet wet in the industry, their most memorable moments, and what they like to do when they're not at a wedding. The best part of White is that your wedding vendors come alive... they are all so blatantly talented, but White allows you to see a softer side, a funnier side and hopefully a side you can connect with.
