Father of the Bride
Tuesday, 18 March 2008

I've heard a lot of great stories in my life.... funny ones, sad tales with dramatic endings, romantic love stories, and good ol' happy day pick-me-ups. But the very best story I have ever heard is when Bryson asked my Dad for his consent to marry me!

Now, our family is like no other. We see each other at least once a week at HUGE family get-togethers. We've had a tradition to share Friday Night Dinners (yes, notice it's capitol since we all make it a priority to be there!) with my Dad's side of the family... 10 of us all together not including BFs, BFFs, ex's... whoever shows up! Sunday Night Dinners (again, in capitol!) are saved for my Mom's side of the family... 29 of us all together since this is a VERY extended family dinner done potluck style!

So with this weekly bonding and borderline-obsession for all things family, you get an idea of what poor Bryson walked into coming from a VERY small family of four. And when it was time to pop the question, Bryson did the sweetest thing ever.... he asked BOTH of my Grandpas AND my Dad for their consent since he knew how extremely close I was to all of them.

Up first, Grandpa Kazu. My Grandpa Kazu was actually fighting cancer at the time (he passed away 2 weeks after we got engaged!) and had to stay home a lot. He sat on his Japanese sofa with a handsewn blanket strewn over his tired legs. That Friday night, my little cousin had made a lei out of purple yarn for him and he wore it proudly around his neck over his salmon colored polo shirt. (I have a picture from this night!) He sat on the couch watching TV while the rest of chatted about our week. He loved it when the family came over. Bryson sat down next to him and told him how much he loved me and would like to ask me to marry him. Grandpa looked him straight in the eye and said, "Yes... just remember to always be happy." He reached his hand out to shake Bryson's hand and welcomed him into the Takekawa family.

Next, Grandpa Wong. If any of you have seen my pokey-haired Grandpa, he's a real character. He's the wittiest 87-year-old in town! He loves to joke around with people and has recently mastered emailing his relatives in China. He's cute and always signs his emails like this... LOL, grandpa.com. I never know if he means Laugh Out Loud or Lots of Love. Either way, LOL rightback at ya! So during Sunday Night Dinner, Bryson walked Grandpa out to his car and told him about his plans to propose. Unlike my traditional, samurai Grandpa Kazu who offered honorable advice, Grandpa Wong looked at him and said,"Hey, are you sure about that?" And laughed. He congratulated Bryson and also welcomed him to the Wong family. (Side note, Grandpa Wong and Bryson have gotten SO close since they both share a love for football and gambling, that on Bryson's 30th birthday, he could pick ONE friend to go to Vegas with and guess who he took? Yup, Grandpa Wong. He's a hoot!)

Finally, my Dad. Tricking my Dad is never an easy task. He's sharp as a tack and will ask all the right questions to get all the right answers. But he has a few weaknesses.... and one of them is TOOLS. My Dad turns into a kid in a candy store when he goes to Home Depot. So the following Friday, while we were all eating, talking story and laughing around the dinner table, Bryson asked my Dad if he could go outside to "show him a new tool he just bought." Funny thing is my Dad knows Bryson doesn't like tools! (Side note, my Dad put together a tool kit for Bryson right after we moved in together... awkward!) Giddy and excited, my Dad hopped out of his chair and followed Bryson outside. In the garage, Bryson told him there were no tools and that he really wanted the chance to ask him for his consent to ask me to marry him. My Dad chuckled (in his Dad-like way) and said "Of course."He gave Bryson a big hug (well as big as a future Father-in-law and future son-in-law will give) and again, welcomed him into the family. You should have seen my Dad walk back into the room, he was glowing, smiling ear-to-ear dying to tell someone the big secret, I'm sure!

Wow, I've never received so many emails and calls asking about MY marriage! MY MARRIAGE? Me and BRYSON?! Who cares to know about us??? After Roy's super sweet, over-the-top romantic analogy of him and Karen "walking in circles" (OK everyone at one time... awe.....), the spotlight turned to ME and how Bryson and I compared to the dynamic couple called the"Kawajis".

Well, first of all, let me back-track and say that Roy and Karen are THE cutest couple ever. We hang out with them all the time and there is NEVER a dull moment with them. Not only does Roy talk a lot (funny and insightful!), they're both witty, sarcastic and brilliant all in one breath. They feed off of each other and I swear, you can FEEL their love for one another. We love the Kawajis.

OK, back to us...

Bryson and I are a different breed of husband and wife. Catch this... we met six years ago, bought our first condo five years ago, got engaged four years ago, got hitched AND started a business together three years ago, launched WHITE with Roy and Karen a year ago, opened the second Wedding Cafe in Ward Warehouse two months ago, bought a new condo and rented our our first condo a month ago and are now sitting on our lanai thinking, WHEW!

So with all the ups, downs and craziness going on in our life, Bryson has been my biggest cheerleader. I will throw out random ideas all the time... Do you think this will work? What do you think about this? Why don't you think this was ever created? And so is our daily conversations in the car, over meals and when we lie in bed. I'm gabbing away and Bryson's stroking my hair, calmly smiling at me with this innocent twinkle in his eye. He's learned to be ready for anything and is always anticipating our next move.

I blurt out ideas and Bryson lays out the foundation of WHO needs to be involved, HOW MUCH it'll cost, WHY we want to do it and WHEN we should execute. It's funny because by the time he's done evaluating, I'm on to my next fabulous idea!

We're always brainstorming together and seeking new adventures. He's my favorite person to talk to... we can hang out on our patio, gazing down at the bustle of Kapiolani Boulevard below and talk story all night. We share our hopes, dreams, travel plans and future goals. They change all the time, but it doesn't matter since we change them together.

In life, we've learned to balance each other out. When I hop, Bryson follows. When I skip, he holds my hand. When I jump, he's there to catch me if I fall. We're so independent, yet just a hop, skip and a jump away from each other all the time.

The Little Black Coat
Friday, 26 October 2007
WOW, did you all check out Roy's blog about FASHION? If you ask me, he hit it ON THE NOSE! Don't you dare laugh at me when you see me strutting the second floor (mall level of course) in my brand new v-neck Voom dress, peep toe wedges from MIO, drop gold dangle earrings with a hint of rose gold coloring and of couse, matching bangles that race halfway up my arm and a matching choker. And who can forget my perfect Marc Jacobs (not the knock off stuff I love!) handbag that I would be tossing over my shoulder when I do my turns. Or was it my D&G humungous shades that I was peering over when I turn? Well anyway... turn, pause, walk, turn, pause, walk...

OK, OK, I know, a bit over the top, but Roy is not kidding when he said Manhattan is a MAJOR fashion runway! The outfit I described is unfortunately totally out of my budget (hint hint Bryson! Happy Birthday to me?!) but a typical fashionista walking the "sidewalks" here in the Big Apple.

Bryson and I have been in New York for three days now and all three days have been a wonderful whirlwind of couture clothing lines, tasty eats and the best people watching ever! "I love New York" is right!

Since we've been here, I have found a new love. You may be thinking... is it all those red velvet cupcakes you see on every corner? NO, though they are DELICIOUS (best cupcakes so far were at Big Booty Bakery and the infamous Magnolia Bakery!) . Is it the fabulousy fast, ever-coming subway system? Must admit, I'm floored with the technology of piecing together a transportation system that moves THOUSANDS of busy New Yorkers from one side of the island to the next in what feels like mere minutes... but no, that's not my new love either. How about the broadway shows? Although some of you know that I have a secret desire to be Simba from The Lion King in my next life, no, that's not my new love either.

The new love I found since being here in New York is simple - my little black coat.

Girls, we ALL have one... you know what I'm talking about. The simple, black pee coat (is that the right way to spell pee coat?) with 3-5 buttons that hits right above your knee. You pick the fabric... cotton, wool, cotton wool blend, leather, hey, even pleather will do! What I'm saying is that no matter what your little black coat is made of, it totally completes your New York oufit.

My little black coat seriously melts onto my shoulders like butter. BUT-TER. There is nothing that makes me happier in the morning after waking up to 50 degree weather and slopping on oodles of gel to take out the serious static cling from my hair than slipping on my little black coat. I FEEL like I belong in New York, I LOOK like I belong in New York. Doesn't matter if I'm sporting a UH tee shirt underneath (which I'm not for the record!) or a stylish silk blouse from Saks (not Saks 5th Ave, but the REAL Saks ON 5th Ave!). Once that pretty little coat touches my shoulders, it's game ON. Time for my runway...

So divalanis, what I'm hinting is the perfect short cut to a New York runway look is the simply stunning little black caot. Yes, Hawaii's tropical weather will make you sweat like a you-know-what, so let's leave this little fashion number in the closet til you book your next destination to Vancouver, Portland, San Fran or New York City! Now I'm not a fashion know-it-all like Emi Hart, Tiffany Young or Jessica O'Neill, but I can guarantee you'll feel like a million bucks once your sassy little black coat melts onto your shoulders too. Call me if you wanna borrow mines, every girl deserves to feel like a diva!

Till we meet again - on the sidewalks of New York or the runway at Ala Moana Center!

A Night of FUN
Monday, 24 September 2007
A few weeks ago, my entire staff at The Wedding Cafe decided to do a "team bonding" night. You know, one of those feel-good-kumbaya-get-to-know-each-other nights? No, we didn't go camping in the wilderness or attempt one of those crazy ropes courses (although I did love the ropes course we did in the 8th grade - Go Puns!). Instead, we all headed to CHEMISTRY BATH AND BODY in Pearlridge Uptown to custom blend a scent of our liking.

"What do you mean by that?" you ask... well, simple. Imagine going into Bath and Body Works anywhere in the mainland and being able to pick your favorite product and then shaking it up til you get the smell you LOVE. That's what Chemistry is all about. Pick your product, pick a scent and voila! A custom scented product is yours. Awesome!

We had a blast hanging out at the Scenting Bar with one of the Chemistry owners, Garrett Goo, as he whipped scent after scent out from behind the bar for our noses to sniff. Rachel wanted something fresh and clean... Daisy wanted something to perk her up in the morning... Rise wanted sweet.... Shana wanted fruity and my sister just wanted to copy everyone else's blends for the heck of it!

Some of our all time scents were Sakura, Rise and Shine, Warm Vanilla and a SECRET, NEW scent not yet released to the world..... GUAVA. YUM!!! (We all had to add a little guava in our blends since it was such an honor to be the very first peeps to lather it on our bodies. Kudos to Garrett!)

After we picked our scents, we gave them fun names like "Butti Frutti", "Cream Me Crazy", "Scrub Me Silly" and "Shower Power" just to name a few. We picked out a creamy body wash, body scrub, silky lotion and the ever popular hand foaming soaps.

We all had a terrific time laughing, smelling all the products, getting creative with our scent picks, playing around with Garrett and his great team, taking pictures and of course, walking out with a custom made product from Chemistry was the best of all! Check 'em out, you'll LOVE the new guava scent - promise. Tell Garrett I sent you and that you heard the "top secret" guava scent is hiding in the back.... :)

Oh What a Feeling!

EXCITING NEWS... my BFF Erin just got engaged! As the MOH, I have been taking her all around town visiting photographers, meeting with florists, checking out videographers and of course, looking for the perfect wedding dress.

I must admit, I love being the MOH and take my job very seriously! I love being the "third wheel" at the meetings giving my opinions and being the designated picture-taker when my BFF comes out of the dressing room in a gorgeous gown. Maybe it's because I live and breathe in the wedding industry (or maybe because I'm bossy?) but I love being a part of their wedding planning process. Don't you find that brides have this permanent glow in their faces and are so excited about everything weddings?! Their energy is contagious and my BFF is no different.

Last week Friday, I took Erin dress shopping. We went to The Bridal Boutique (kudos to Joyce and Cecilia!) where she was whisked away to try on a dozen of the most beautiful dresses I have ever seen... lace, silk, chiffon, pick up skirts, low backs... you name it, she tried it! To be honest, Erin was never a dress-wearing girl. She loved to lounge in a comfy pair of jeans and girly tee. So, naturally, she went into the shop not having a clue what she wanted.

Dress after dress, we did the whole ooh and ahh bit, snapping shots of every dress she had on. They were all so dazzling and eye popping in their own unique ways... but when she came out of the dressing room with Dress #6, I remember hearing my BFF gasp in the mirror (hand to her mouth and all!) when she caught a glimpse of herself in the mirror. You know that crazy saying, "When you find the right dress, you'll just KNOW?" Well, she knew!!! We were giggling, smiling, tearing... I took pictures of her in the gown from every angle possible! In fact, we had Cecilia take a photo of me AND Erin in the pretty dress! You should have seen us, we must have looked like school kids clapping and cheering for the winner dress. (I think I even told myself in my head that I wanted to wear a wedding gown again like hers since it was so darn beautiful! Ha!) We were all so happy with the way the gown (descriptions being left out purposely in case her fiancé is reading this!) fit her body so perfectly. The cut, the style, the neckline, the train, everything was just right on her. I'll never forget the way she gazed at herself in the mirror feeling so gorgeous, confident and ready. She had this wonderful glow around her and she couldn't stop smiling for the rest of the day. From my experience as a bride, I can tell you feeling like a Princess in an amazing gown knowing you're marrying the man of your dreams is the BEST feeling...
